On break lunch, the editorial team of BPPM Equilibrium coming to DEQPI office. The team got a chance tointerview the chairman of FEB’s dashboard, Rika Fatimah P.L, talk about gait of the founding and activity of anything has been done.
What is the background to the establishment of Dashboard for Excellence Quality and Productivity Improvement (DEQPI)?
Background DEQPI which is fit with vision and mission FEB coupled with AACSB rise. Most research center oriented in social, sociological, or academic aspects. The center of science can be given to public to enrich the science at the same time. However, publication in Indonesia is limited to publication of the book and conference. It is very rare to publish in international journal. There are scientists that we do not meet in the other parts of world read, judge, and give comments about our journals.
So, we have the point. We can advance the science wherever we are. The knowledge of researchers will rise when they receive criticism from many people, especially by other researchers.
However, the science of improving the quality and productivity in Indonesia has not been placed yet in a large capacity. If we check to the other developed countries and progressive forward countries such as Korea, the institution of quality and productivity stands and equivalents to the ministry.
Well, those are the background why I have an idea to establish DEQPI. It is devoting more toward how to increase the productivity and the quality of program. We believe that people already know about it, but have no idea how to improve them.
How was the beginning of DEQPI established?
I started joined at FEB between March-April 2014, then in June DEQPI formally established. Before that, FEB asked me what contribution that I can give to this faculty. In addition to give standard contribution, I really want to set up a research center that concern on productivity and the quality. It may also be one of my interest points that they looked up to join in FEB.
I was called by the dean on Wednesday. On Monday before, I have been asked to meet him to give the research center proposal. At that time I thought I was called because of my proposal, but I was wrong. The dean said, “Not long time ago I was travelling to some countries. I realized that the quality of productivity was placed so important there. Well, if we don’t start, who is the else? Could you make the proposal?” I shocked and confused because I have already made the proposal and intended to submit it. So, what a coincidence!
What are the scopes of DEQPI’s research?
DEQPI has three scopes: social, professional, and academic. If we do a social movement, we also build the community there. The science is applied there and must be checked also with its community. After that, we can know whether we do is correct or not. These things move together.
How far DEQPI do their scope?
DEQPI holds more activities to do a branding or socialization. We want to improve the awareness of DEQPI and also awareness of quality improvement. We try to socialize by involved in the events, active in national and international forum as the invited speaker.
In 2014, DEQPI helped one of the biggest outsourcing company in Indonesia to build a new concept of their reporting system. The old system couldn’t work well, so they need the new one which can simplify the work and maximize the productivity of office manager.
Who are the people which participated in the activities of DEQPI?
Scopes of DEQPI research are academic, industrial, and social. This social scope is involved by the citizenships. For academic scope, many experts get involved, as well as the industry. If these three things are not there, DEQPI cannot do anything.
The assistants are also very helpful. They are the backbone of the DEQPI. For the future, DEQPI will be moved by the students, not just lecturers. So, there will be a win-win solution or collaboration between lecturers who hold science and students who know better the circumstances right now.
What will DEQPI do to support the process of students learning in FEB UGM?
I will get them to be a part of DEQPI. The operation management lecture is very abstract, very conceptual. I plan to ask the students to give an example of decision-making that DEQPI should do in the future. They will criticize DEQPI with referral from their text books. We believe that learning by experience is easier than learning by reading text books.
